Compressed Air Energy Storage
Storing Ontario's surplus energy as compressed air in natural rock reservoirs — and returning it to the grid when the province needs it most.
How CAES worksWhere to start
How compressed air energy storage works, and why proven equipment and existing geology make it deliverable now.
Emissions avoided, jobs created in Ontario, homes powered and costs stabilised for ratepayers.

An innovative green solution
Surplus electricity generated in periods of low demand is stored as compressed air. When demand rises, that air is used to generate electricity for Ontario's homes and businesses.
01 — Surplus
Ontario generates more electricity than it needs in periods of low demand. Without somewhere to put it, that surplus is curtailed.
02 — Compress
That electricity drives compressors instead of being thrown away. The equipment is proven and already in industrial service.
03 — Store
The air is stored in porous geological formations already present underground — existing environmental features, put to use rather than replaced.
04 — Generate
When demand peaks, the stored air generates electricity for Ontario's residences and businesses — reducing waste and stabilising energy costs.

Delivering power to the grid
Bedrock's projects make use of geological features that already exist, in communities the company has been meeting with since 2023. Stored air is returned to the grid where Ontario's demand actually sits.
